Is Your Neighbors Horse for Sale?

It's easy to find a horse for sale but buying a horse means looking past the pretty face. A successful search requires patience, knowledge, and a self examination into what you're looking for. Possibly the greatest challenge at a horse sale is evaluating, "will the two of you connect". (A little like dating, huh?)

As in a new relationship, we are attracted to what we consider to be "good looks". At a horse sale, great confirmation, attractive coloring, and a strong gait are the first alluring traits. You may have a neighbor that may offer a horse for sale. This is a great opportunity to observe the horses behavior. No matter where your search takes you for a horse, it's the horses personality and temperament that are equally important with good looks. It's just move challenging at events offering horses for sale.

Here's where your patience and knowledge comes in . .Whether you buy at a horse auction, answer an advertisement offering ponies for sale, or explore the save a horse program, it's always wise to get a professional veterinarian to examine your finalist. (This is not recommended during the dating process!)

Okay, the veterinarian says the horse is sound and healthy. How can you predict the horses temperament without a long standing relationship? Like people, horses will generally mirror their surroundings. If you're uptight and nervous, they will be also. If your movements are slow and supportive, your voice reassuring, they too will likely relax. Sudden, forceful movements and a loud voice will likely make the horse uneasy and you'll likely look elsewhere.

We've all heard the saying, "nothing teaches like experience". That's why it can be helpful to meet some of the veterans who buy and sell horses regularly.
